Afraid of beauty?

Growing up in Northern Vermont, reverse snobbism dictated it wasn’t cool to drive too nice a car. In Northern New Hampshire you can feel downright self conscious if you’re too well put together.

I’m always so relieved when I get the text that EVERYONE loves the cut, the styling, whatever. Because I’ve had women look in the mirror and say, oh, wow, I look ten years younger—only to have them never return. You’d think I wouldn’t admit this. Yep, that’s where I want to go with it, too. Did something wrong.

Later, I run across someone who knows the woman, and I can’t help myself. Admit it or not, its been eating at me because I knew she looked more like herself, more vibrant, more beautiful. Aaannnd, you find out the SON couldn’t deal with the change. Or the best friend hated something.

Ok, so we know people don’t like change, but fear of beauty? Yes, I’ve been advised to put this disclaimer on my style retreat packet. Buyer beware. People may react negatively to a more beautiful you.

Here’s an example of a Before and After and what she had to say afterward:

“I wanted to thank you again for helping me be so beautiful in Miami. I loved spending time with you and appreciated all that you did to help me get ready for the photo shoot as well as what you did for my self esteem - I saw, in the mirror a lovely Rockstar and it lifted my soul!”

So can you believe the family hated it and pressured her to backtrack? But there it is. There are people out there who're insecure and when you look good, it makes them nervous.

We all worry to an extent what other people think. But as we get older, we realize some people can’t be pleased. Threatened is threatened. And kind of scary. So if you have this situation, you have to choose. Are you going to stay small and keep their monster at bay or are you going to stand up and be the beautiful self you can be?

Looking good is a delightful form of self love.

Style tip:

When you put away summer clothes and change out your closet, make sure you put your a-list only fall/winter items into it.  I pay attention to my initial response to each item emerging from storage.  Slow down and be mindful. If you don't wear something, hold it out to get ideas from an expert on different ways to style it or go with your initial instinct and get rid of it. I find that with the things I say, oh, I'll give it one more season to see if I'll wear it tends to be the thing that hangs untouched for one more season.
